“You were in some trouble back there.”

I opened my eyes, finding myself in a dark room. I heard a sound like something dripping and had a vague sense that I was underground, but the bed I lay on was soft and warm. I couldn’t tell where the voice was coming from as I sat up, waiting for my eyes to adjust to the nearly complete blackness that surrounded me.

“Aren’t you going to thank me?” said the voice again, just barely above a whisper.

As I heard it, I felt hot breath on the back of my neck. I jumped out of the bed, looking anywhere for an exit.

“You can’t run. It’s useless,” said the voice.

A light flickered as a match was lit and touched to a candle that rested at the bedside. It was just enough light to see a man, sitting up in bed beside me. He looked to be in his late twenties or early thirties with a sharp, angular face, handsome, and yet rough. His body stretched a tight black t-shirt that showed off his robust chest and pulsing arms, powerful, but not too bulky.

I saw his eyes, unmistakably the blue ones of before, but they’d lost their supernatural glow.

“Why don’t you lay back down? You need rest.”

“I want to go,” I said, my voice trembling. “Please, let me go.”

“You know I can’t do that.”

“Why? Why can’t you let me go? Please, please just let me go. Don’t hurt me, oh…”

“I’m not going to hurt you. You’re too important for that. I can’t let you go because it’s too dangerous out there for you. Do you even want to go?”

“Yes, yes I do,” I said emphatically. “I’m one hundred percent certain of that.”

“Isn’t there something else you want?” he said, getting up from the bed and coming around behind me.

He hovered a few inches away from my body, but it was as if he was magnetic. I could feel him, his power, his lure. I was shaking, scared of him – but there was another feeling that began to build inside me, too vague to discern at this nascent stage.

Now he ran his hand down my arm and I felt electricity, pure and white shooting through my body. He exhaled again on the back of my neck.

“Alexis, what do you really want?”

“H-h-how do you know my name?” I trembled.

“You’re a smart girl. You know I’ve been watching you. Well, you didn’t know it was me, per se. But you knew someone was watching. I pick up on things,” he said, his whispery growl of a voice making the hairs on the back of my neck stand and sending chills down my spine.

“Who are you?” I asked, my voice breaking into a soft cry.

“My name is Kieran.”

“Why are you watching me?”

“Because you’re just so damn interesting,” he said, breaking into a cynical laugh.

My body tensed as I waited. Waited for what? I was trapped, bound to his desires. There was nothing I could do to escape. Even now that my eyes had adjusted to the dark, I could see no exit through which to run.
